Why Rubber Shark?
When I was around six years old, I was gifted a little plastic fishing boat for Christmas . It came with two posable scuba divers - one red and one yellow - and a rubber great white shark, who would eat them alive with great frequency on many a bath night.
My brother and I would stay up after bedtime dreaming up myriad horrible situations that would befall “red guy” and “yellow guy”, laughing and giggling until my father would stomp down the hallway and put an end to the noise.
Years later, I thought of that rubber shark and what it symbolizes to me as an adult. Perhaps the rubber means the flexibility to shift with life’s changes; and the shark represents tenacity in the face of obstacles.
Maybe I'm just shoehorning symbolism into a cheap rubber toy, but I like to think that it gives me something to aspire towards.
